Our Programs NAREE WANDIMA Naree Wandima or I RISE UP from the Gorenpul and Yuggera language group, values our participants as whole people. Partnering with the Institute of Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Health Service (AITSICHS), Naree Wandima strengthens participants overall emotional and social wellbeing addressing drug and alcohol reliance with emotional, practical and community support. Our case workers walk alongside participants providing support designed specifically for them. Support plans that meet them where they are and help them get to where they want to be. Program deliverables:Drug and Alcohol Support – link to referral form Bandarr-Gan-Gu – To Strengthen Women Yakka Malar – The Hard Work of Men GIFT OF GALLANG Gift of Gallang was born out of the tragic loss of a young man who in his primary years often spoke of the ideation of suicide and sadly completed in his late teen years. Through the passion, commitment, dedicated and burning desire to see change in our young ones lives a group of local community members and organisations banded together to form the ‘Committee of Hope’ and help develop and grow this program.Focussing on social and emotional wellbeing and grounded in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural practices, Gift of Gallang, works with students in grades four to six with the aim to strengthen resilience, emotional control and pride. COMMUNITY JUSTICE GROUP The Community Justice Group (CJG), funded by the Department of Justice and Attorney General, is group of Elders and respected persons within our community who develop culturally safe and specific strategies to deal with justice related issues, support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within the criminal justice system and to decrease our people’s contacts with the Justice system. Program deliverables: - Community Justice Group - Murri Court NAIDOC NAIDOC is the biggest week on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander calendar and in Inala, we are here for it! NAIDOC LAUNCH Join us on the first Monday of NAIDOC week as we launch our NAIDOC celebrations. Held at Inala Plaza this event is a public celebration of our existence, survival and ongoing contribution society. A Welcome to Country, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dancers, Elders and community along with the wider community and representative from all three levels of Government join together to acknowledge our community and to invite the wider community to participate and learn more about our cultures. FAMILY FUN DAY Our NAIDOC Family Fun Day is the best! Held on the Wednesday of NAIDOC week our community gathers to celebrate, catch up and connect. Local artists perform and sell their work, there are cultural activities designed for all ages, information and giveaways, prizes and rides. Truly a fun event for all ages and everyone is welcome. Inala Elders Urban Dreaming Each year during NAIDOC the Inala Elders curate an exhibition featuring local artists. Most of the works are for sale meaning that you can own your own piece of original Indigenous art. For details please check the Inala Elders Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Community-Organization/Inala-Elders-Aboriginal-and-Torres-Strait-Islander-Corporation-645043258943284/ MABO DAY Celebrating Eddie Mabo, a Torres Strait Islander Elder whose campaign for Indigenous land rights led to a landmark decision of the High Court of Australia overturning ‘terra nullius’ (land belonging to no-one), our Mabo Celebration is a significant day on our calendar. Mabo Day Community Celebrations are for gathering, celebrating and recognising Torres Strait Islander peoples’ culture, history and contributions through song, dance, performance, informed debate, activities and of course, an Islander feed. Mabo Day is a feast for your senses and full of joy. Everyone is welcome. BAIL SUPPORT The SWAP program supports our most vulnerable and at-risk young people, those who are at a high risk of being remanded into custody. Partnering with youth workers at Inala Youth Service (IYS) this program provides intensive bail support services that focus on positive relationships, positive social and community engagement and supporting participants to make positive choices and change in their lives. Program deliverables: - Youth Justice and Court Support - Youth Diversionary Support- Youth Skills – Skilled Queenslander’s for Work WEST INALA JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE CLUB When the local junior rugby league club was going to close, Inala Wangarra stepped in to ensure that our kids, women and Masters teams still had an opportunity to play. Run by a committed group of volunteers and supported by Wangarra, Wests Inala provided a place for our community, and the wider community to play, learn, connect and stay fit through Rugby League. https://www.facebook.com/pages/West-Inala-Rugby-League-Club/362694804241638 WOMEN'S PROGRAM This program is all about our women – creating connections, supporting the development of leadership skills and self-confidence, enhancing personal growth and well-being. Based in traditional notions of Women’s Business activities also encourage friendship, yarning, community and a lot of laughing. Our women get together to make and create art and sewing projects, yarn about important topics, take day trips and attend cultural and arts events. Our program has been developed to ensure our community has opportunities to connect with, participate in, co-create and consume rich and beautiful artistic processes, products and performances. We do this through partnerships with major arts organisations, local community organisations, artists – both local and non-local – and our community – to tell the stories of Inala and to share the ideas, experiences, hopes and dreams of our community. Program deliverables: - #knowledgekeepers - Jarjums Life Museum - Singing our Songlines - Our Home 4077 - Festival 2018 - Dear Inala - Artist Database - Professional development opportunities - Cultural Links Program RESOURCE OFFICER Following a traumatic time for our community, where 30 lives were lost in a six-month period, our Resource Officer position was created. This was considered essential as we know the enduring impact Sorry Business has on the lives of family, friends and community. Our Resource Officer supports the emotional and social wellbeing of community members as we as delivering the Gift of Gallang Program. TOO SOLID AWARDS Our jarjums are deadly. So deadly that we have a special night dedicated to celebrating them and their school-based achievements. The Too Solid Awards bring together all the students, families, school principals and teachers together with our community. These awards, instigated by local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents and workers, are a fun and positive celebration that empowers our kids and their families, cultural identity and promotes successful outcomes at school for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ THE SEVENTY7 YOUTH HANGOUT SPACE Head on down to our youth hangout space on a Friday or Saturday night and you will see a mob of deadly young people hanging out, playing sport, creating artwork or playing our arcade games. The Seventy7 is a safe, fun and accessible place for our young ones to come on the weekends and over the holidays.
